Yup. Just like what was stated by the national historian professor, when was our country ever colonized or invaded! Whomever says we were colonized by the British or were invaded by a group of Indonesians wielding sharpened bamboos as weapons, that's simply rubbish! After all, that was an old story! This is 2012. That talk about a group of Indonesians feeling dissatisfied and highly upset, even madly angry at our country, was back in 2009. Er, but wait... what's this report here...? ******* From in.reuters.com (28-06-2012): Malaysia steps on Indonesia's toes in dance dispute (Reuters) - Malaysia is separated from Indonesia's Sumatra island by just 40 miles of water, but an ocean has opened up between them over who owns a traditional dance, the latest in a series of disputes between the Southeast Asian neighbors. The feud, one of many over issues as diverse as culture, pollution and borders in the region of 600 million people, adds to the difficulties leaders face in trying to turn Southeast Asia into a unified economic community by 2015. Malaysian efforts to promote the Tor-tor folk dance and Gordang Sambilan drum performance - both with origins in Sumatra - as its own cultural heritage sparked protests this month in Jakarta, where a group torched Malaysia's flag and threw stones at its embassy. The violence was a sharp contrast to the Tor-tor itself - a gentle, traditional dance featuring a mix of subtle hand and leg movements. ..... While anger will soon dissipate, a common sentiment heard in Indonesia is simply disappointment that Malaysia feels the need to "steal" its culture. From the Malaysian perspective, it is simply about preserving culture that is in danger of dying out. "Recognizing these two cultures under the act doesn't mean that it is being 'claimed' and owned by Malaysia. What we hope is, through the registration of the cultures, they can be preserved and widely promoted," said Ramli Abdul Karim Hasibuan, president of the Mandailing association in Malaysia. Scholars say the Mandailing people in Malaysia did not resist colonial British attempts last century to label them as Malay, which led to their culture evaporating, whereas traditions have been preserved better in Sumatra, Indonesia's largest island and full of different ethnicities. The younger generation, more likely to dance to hip-hop than the Tor-tor, is more concerned about who wins between Malaysia and Indonesia on the soccer pitch, though haze pollution in Kuala Lumpur from Indonesian land-clearing fires is a real irritant. While you're at it, keep your haze to yourself too," said Twitter user @mediha_m, responding to Indonesians on the social media site lambasting Malaysia's cultural poverty. Iye. Dari pandangan Malaysia, ia hanyalah demi memelihara budaya yang dikhuatiri lenyap. "Mengiktiraf dua budaya ini di bawah akta itu tidaklah bermakna ianya dituntut dan dimiliki oleh Malaysia. Apa yang kami harap ialah, menerusi pendaftaran budaya ini, ianya boleh dipelihara dan dipromosi dengan meluas," kata Ramli Abdul Karim Hasibuan, presiden persatuan Mandailing di Malaysia. Pakar berkata kaum Mandailing di Malaysia tidak menentang usaha penjajah British di abad lepas yang melabel mereka sebagai Melayu, ini membawa kepada kehilangan budaya mereka, walhal tradisi lebih terpelihara di Sumatera, pulau terbesar di Indonesia dan penuh dengan pelbagai kaum. 2012. In fact, it's already mid-way through the year 2012, and pretty soon, it'll be 2013. Yup, that means we are already well inside the new millennium, that it would be somewhat awkward to label it as new anymore. In this 'new' millennium, we have seen or heard various inventions and products, amazing, weird, or simply unthought of by the general masses in the last millennium, even as late as in the 1990's. However, it is sad to note that some population are, even as this piece is written, still way behind, not only in the apparatus that they use or do not possess, but also in their way of thinking. Really saddening. How uncivilized. How unfortunate. ******* From New Malaysia with wong chun wai (26-09-2009): This has to be the funnniest story I have ever read. A group of Indonesian vigilantes calling themselves Benteng Demokrasi Indonesia (Bendera) has been busy gearing themselves up to invade Malaysia, the country's latest news online website Daily Chilli reported. According to the group - the same one which recently set up roadblocks in Jakarta to look for Malaysians - they would travel to Malaysia via sea, land and air. When asked by the Jakarta Globe on how they intend to carry their weapons on board a plane, their spokesman said they had a way of doing it but did not elaborate. Their weapons, which they claimed they have been collecting, included bows and arrows, samurai swords and spears. Yes, they would also be using Indonesian black magic. As part of their reconnaisance, they claimed to have sent 10 Indonesian "spies" to Malaysia. They claimed their countrymen, migrant workers and students, would be backing them. Bendera claimsto have 1,000 odd registered members - the "warriors" include 40 men without limbs and 10 on wheelchairs! 2012. Malah, sekarang telahpun pertengahan tahun 2012, lalu tidak lama lagi mucul pula 2013. Maknanya, kita sudah lama melangkah masuk ke alaf baru, hatta agak kekok untuk masih menggelarnya sebagai baru.  Dalam alaf 'baru' ini, kita telah melihat atau mendengar pelbagai rekaan dan barangan, yang menakjubkan, pelik, atau semata2 tidak terfikir pun pada orang2 kebanyakan di alaf dulu, walaupun sudah menjejak 1990-an.  Namun terasa sedih bila didapati ada juga manusia, walau di saat penulisan ini dibuat, yang masih tertinggal jauh, bukan saja dalam peralatan yang mereka guna atau tidak miliki, tetapi juga corak pemikiran mereka. Cukup menyedihkan. Cukup tidak bertamadun. Cukup malang. ******* Dari Malaysia Baru dengan wong chun wai (26-09-2009): Ini mesti cerita paling kelakar saya pernah baca. Suatu kumpulan pengawasan yang menggelar diri mereka Benteng Demokrasi Indonesia (Bendera) telah bekerjakeras menyiapsediakan diri untuk menakluk Malaysia, menurut laporan Daily Chilli, laman berita2 dalam talian terbaru di Indonesia. Mereka mendakwa rakan2 senegara, pekerja2 pendatang dan juga para pelajar akan menyokong mereka.
