Sudah Hampir Masuk Tahun 2013


Malaysia had just had a double celebration regarding its formation:
1) the 55th Independence Day on 31st August, and 2) the 49th Malaysia Day on 16th September.

What? 2 separate occasions?
Well for those who aren't familiar, here is a simplified explanation:
31st August 1957 was the day the Peninsular Malay states gained their freedom as a single entity from the British, forming the Federation of Malay States.
16th September 1963 was the day the states of Sabah and Sarawak in the Borneo Island decided to work with those states in the peninsular (by then the independent Federation of Malay States) and together form a new country, Malaysia.
Of course there were other events involved, but remember, the above are the shortened version.


The point is, the country has been around for more or less 50 years now. "Around" meaning having been on its own feet, having its path charted by its own citizen, having been administered and governed by its own people.

So, the next question is, what have the country done or achieved in those 50 years or so?

Well ladies and gentlemen, let's review some of the country's pride and joy then!


National Car
Proton is the National Car, and the National Car is Proton. Sorry, Perodua, you are number 2. Proton was established in 1983 under the country's then Prime Minister. That was almost 30 years ago. As of mid-2008, they had already produced more than 3million cars of various models. In 1983 they rolled out the 1st Proton Saga, then the 1st hatchback the Satria in 1995, and now they have also had the 1st multi-purpose vehicle (mpv) the Exora in 2009.
Bravo, what a proud achievement!

Proton offers lifetime warranty on power windows
SUBANG JAYA: Proton Holdings Bhd has once and for all moved to erase any doubt over defective power windows by offering a lifetime warranty for all new Proton models registered from Sept 1, 2011 and vehicles that are still under the manufacturer's warranty (as at Sept 1).

Group managing director Datuk Seri Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir said the lifetime warranty for Proton's power windows is limited to 250,000km or 10 years from the date of the vehicle registration, whichever comes first.

“We want to encourage our customers to use their power windows as hard as they want and if there is a problem, Proton will fix it free of charge for them,” he said at a briefing yesterday.

Syed Zainal said Proton wanted to erase the prevailing stigma that the national car company was synonymous with failing power windows.

“It's been going on for years and it's still a negative perception for those who have never even driven or owned a Proton vehicle!”

Top 11 best new car features for 2011
As the New Year ushers in a new round of award programs, a personal favourite of mine is the AJAC (Automobile Journalists Association of Canada) Technology Award. Primarily because I’m on the judging panel and because it’s an opportunity to highlight or explain interesting new technologies that sometimes get overlooked, for one reason or another.
There are eleven entries for the 2011 award and the winner will be announced at the Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto Feb 17.
Here are the entries:

MyFord Touch: Ford
Driver distraction is an increasingly important issue and the MyFord Touch is a technology that helps a driver to keep both hands on the steering wheel and eyes on the road ahead. It’s a less distracting way to connect a driver with in-car electronic accessories. Traditional vehicle buttons, knobs and gauges are replaced with colourful LCD displays and 5-way control switches. Each screen can be personalized to display information relevant to individual drivers and are used with a simple button click, a touch-screen tap or a voice command. Improved voice recognition performance now allows it to recognize more than 10,000 commands. MyFord Touch can also provide in-vehicle Internet access through wireless data provider, which turns the vehicle into a hot spot that passengers can use while the vehicle is in motion.

Air Shutter System: GM
The Eco version of the all-new 2011 Chevrolet Cruze is one of the most fuel-efficient (non-hybrid) small cars on the market and the Air Shutter system helps it achieve a 5.0L /100km highway rating.
Eco is a lighter and trimmer edition of the Cruze that has a lower ride height. Hidden behind its front grille is the Air Shutter System. According to GM it contributes nearly half a mile per gallon in combined city and highway driving.
The system uses sensors to monitor wind and temperature conditions. The sensors are married to electric motors that can open and close the shutters automatically. With the shutters closed at high speeds, wind drag is reduced. At lower speeds, the shutters open to maximize engine-cooling air flow.

Bongiovi Power Station: Toyota
The Bongiovi Acoustics Digital Power Station is an inexpensive way to transform a basic auto system into a premium sound system. It’s a dealer installed upgrade designed for most late model Toyotas and costs $280 plus installation, which generally takes less than an hour.
The Bongiovi name sounds like Bon Jovi and that’s because it is the actual family name of the rock star, however it his cousin (Tony) that puts his name on this audio upgrade. Toyota Canada claims that it’s the world’s first 100% digital audio processing system certified for automotive use.
DPS re-masters music in real time to enhance quality and provides a noticeable improvement in audio performance and clarity. The DPS system processes the audio stream in real time and routes the enhanced audio to a 4 channel digital amplification system that provides clearer highs, deeper bass and a reduction of background/white noise.
When installed, the DPS module is hidden behind the dash and integrates seamlessly with the existing factory audio system. It’s pre-loaded with vehicle specific tuning profiles covering most Toyota models and optimizes all audio routed through the vehicle’s radio, be it AM/FM, CD, Satellite Radio, MP3, streaming media, Bluetooth, etc.

Lithium Polymer Battery: Hyundai
The new 2011 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid uses a unique lithium polymer battery technology. Inside the battery, a polymer gel instead of a liquid is used as an electrolyte. In addition, inside each cell, the cathode, separator, and anode are laminated together.
Comparing it to a Lithium Ion battery, Hyundai claims that the Lithium Polymer battery has higher energy density, higher thermal robustness, increased resistance to physical damage, it’s simpler to manufacture, costs less to make, allows more charge-discharge cycles and, most important of all, it’s twenty per cent smaller.
Another advantage of the lithium polymer battery is its impact on cargo space. The cylindrical shape of the current Lithium Ion battery limits how they can be packaged and placed in a vehicle. The Lithium Polymer battery is more flexible and can be designed to fit less intrusively, which allows more cargo or passenger space.
The Hyundai Sonata Hybrid uses a 270V (5.3Ah) version of this new battery technology

In a blog posting dated April 12, the former premier said that he had stopped using Proton cars after relinquishing his position in 2003.

“I stopped using Proton cars after I stepped down.

“I wanted to enjoy the ‘superior quality’ of the high-end European and Japanese cars,” Mahathir had said, implying that Proton made inferior cars which were not enjoyable to drive.

Even his car aficionado and businessman son Mokhzani had preferred to steer clear of Proton, opting to be the importer of Porsche models instead.
 

Negara baru saja selesai perayaan berkembar tentang penubuhannya:
1) Hari Merdeka ke-55 pada 31hb Ogos, dan 2) Hari Malaysia ke-49 pada 16hb September.

Eh? Kenapa 2 sambutan berbeza?
Untuk yang belum tahu asalusul Malaysia, ini penjelasan ringkas:
31hb Ogos 1957 ialah hari negeri2 di semenanjung Tanah Melayu dipersetujui menjadi satu negara merdeka oleh British, sebagai Persekutuan Tanah Melayu.
16hb September 1963 pula, Sabah dan Sarawak di Pulau Borneo memutuskan untuk bersama2 dengan negeri2 di semenanjung (Persekutuan Tanah Melayu yang telah merdeka) lalu bersama2 membentuk negara baru Malaysia.
Sudah tentu banyak lagi perkara lain yang terbabit, tapi jangan lupa ini cuma penerangan pendek.

Pokoknya, kini Malaysia telah pun wujud selama lebihkurang 50 tahun. "Wujud" bermaksud sudah berdiri atas kaki sendiri, sudah ada pelan halatuju lukisan rakyat sendiri, sudah ditadbir dan diurus oleh orang2nya sendiri.

Jadi, soalan berikutnya, apa yang telah dilakukan dan dicapai oleh Malaysia sepanjang 50 tahun ini?

Tuan2 dan puan2, marilah kita imbas sebahagian dari kebanggaan dan kegembiraan negara ini!


Kereta Nasional
Proton adalah Kereta Nasional, dan Kereta Nasional ialah Proton. Maaf, Perodua, anda nombor 2. Proton ditubuhkan pada 1983 oleh Perdana Menteri negara ketika itu. Itu hampir 30 tahun dulu. Setakat pertengahan 2008, Proton sudah menghasilkan lebih dari 3juta kereta dari pelbagai model. Pada 1983, Proton Saga pertama dikeluarkan, kemudian "hatchback" pertama Proton Satria pada 1995, dan kini mereka juga ada "MPV" pertama Proton Exora sejak 2009.
Syabas, alangkah membanggakan!

Proton menjamin sepanjanghayat untuk tingkap berkuasa
SUBANG JAYA: Proton Holdings Bhd telah bertindak demi memadam terus apa2 kesangsian terhadap tingkap berkuasa yang bermasalah dengan menjamin sepanjanghayat bagi semua model Proton didaftar mulai 1 Sept 2011 dan yang masih dalam jaminan pengilang (setakat 1hb Sept).

Pengarah Urusan Kumpulan, Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir menekankan bahwa jaminan sepanjanghayat tingkap berkuasa Proton terhad pada 250,000Km atau 10tahun dari tarikh pendaftaran kenderaan, yang mana dulu.

11 ciri kereta baru terbaik untuk 2011
Sementara Tahun Baru ini membariskan berbagai rancangan anugerah, satu kegemaran saya ialah Anugerah Teknologi AJAC (Pertubuhan Penulis Otomobil Kanada). Terutamanya kerana saya dalam panel hakim dan ianya juga peluang untuk mengketengah atau menjelaskan teknologi baru yang menarik yang kadangkala terlepas pandang atas sebab2 tertentu.
Terdapat 11 pencalonan untuk anugerah 2011, dan pemenang akan diumum di Pertunjukan Kereta Antarabangsa Kanada di Toronto 17 Feb.
Berikut ialah calon2nya:

MyFord Touch: Ford
Gangguan tumpuan pemandu makin diberi perhatian dan MyFord Touch ialah teknologi yang menolong pemandu mengekalkan kedua2 tangan pada stering dan kedua2 mata pada jalan. Ia mengurangkan gangguan ketika interaksi pemandu dan alatan elektronik dalam kereta. Butang dan alat sukat tradisi ditukar pada pemuka LCD warnawarni dan suis kawalan 5-hala. Pemuka boleh disesuai menurut citarasa peribadi bagi memapar maklumat perlu sahaja dan ia digunakan semudah tekanan butang, sentuhan pemuka, atau arahan suara. Keupayaan mengenal suara telah ditambahbaik hingga memahami 10,000 arahan. MyFord Touch boleh menyediakan laluan internet tanpa wayar dalam kereta, di mana kenderaan menjadi 'hot spot' yang dapat digunakan penumpang ketika kenderaan sedang bergerak.

Sistem Bidai Udara: GM
Chevrolet Cruze 2011 serba baru versi Eco adalah salahsatu kereta kelas kecil (bukan hybrid) paling jimat petrol di pasaran dan sistem Bidai Udara mampu memberinya kadar hingga serendah 5L/100Km di lebuhraya. Eco ialah edisi lebih ringan dan ringkas untuk Cruze yang lebih rendah. Menurut GM, Sistem Bidai Udara yang disorok di belakang gril hadapan menambah hampir 1/2batu setiap gelen dalam pemanduan campuran bandar-lebuhraya. Sistem ini mengguna pengesan untuk menentukan angin dan suhu, dan disambung pada motor yang menggerakkan bidai terbuka dan tertutup sendiri. Bila bidai tertutup pada kelajuan tinggi, rintangan angin dikurangkan. Bila perlahan, bidai terbuka dan aliran udara maksima menyejukkan enjin.

Stesen Kuasa Bongiovi: Toyota
Stesen Kuasa Digital Bongiovi Acoustics adalah cara murah untuk menukar sistem asas dalam kereta ke sistem audio berkelas tinggi. Ia berharga $280 termasuk  upah pasang oleh pengedar sebagai peralatan tambahan bagi model2 terbaru Toyota, kebiasaannya mengambil masa kurang sejam.
Nama Bongiovi mirip Bon Jovi kerana memang itu nama keluarga bintang rock itu, tetapi sepupunya (Tony) yang memiliki sistem ini. Toyota Canada mendakwanya sistem pemproses audio 100% digital pertama di dunia yang diperakui untuk kenderaan. Sistem DPS ini merekod muzik semula pada waktu nyata untuk meningkatkan mutu audio secara ketara dengan bunyi yang jelas. DPS memproses aliran audio dan menyalurkan audio yang telah dipertingkat itu ke sistem pembesaran digital 4 saluran lalu mengeluarkan nada tinggi yang lebih jelas, nada bass yang lebih garau serta pengurangan dalam bunyi bising latar.
Modul DPS dipasang tersorok belakang papan dash dan digabung kemas bersama sistem audio asal dari kilang. Ia dimuat siap sedia dengan profil penalaan khas bagi setiap kereta, meliputi kebanyakan model Toyota, dan memastikan semua audio disalur sebaiknya ke radio kenderaan samada AM/FM, CD, Radio Satelit, MP3, media bertali-arus, Bluetooth dll.

Bateri Lithium Polimer: Hyundai Hyundai Sonata Hybrid 2011 yang baru menggunakan teknologi unik bateri lithium polimer. Dalam bateri itu, gel polimer, bukan cecair, diguna sebagai elektrolit. Tambahan lagi, dalam setiap sel, katod, anod dan pemisah adalah dilapiskan bersama.
Berbanding bateri Lithium Ion, Hyundai berkata bateri Lithium Polimer memiliki kepadatan tenaga lebih tinggi, kelasakan haba lebih tinggi, dayatahan atas kerosakan fizikal yang meningkat, pembuatan lebih ringkas, harga pembuatan lebih rendah, kitaran caj-nyahcaj yang lebih banyak, dan terpenting sekali, 20 peratus lebih kecil.
Satu lagi kelebihan bateri lithium polimer ialah kesannya pada ruang barangan. Bentuk silinder bateri Lithium Ion sekarang menghadkan bagaimana ia dipakej dan ditempat di dalam sesuatu kenderaan. Bateri Lithium Polimer boleh diubahsuai dan direka supaya tidak menonjol, yang membolehkan lebih banyak ruang barang atau penumpang.

Dalam penulisan blog pada 12 April, bekas perdana menteri itu berkata dia berhenti mengguna kereta Proton setelah bersara tahun 2003.

“Saya berhenti mengguna kereta Proton setelah meletak jawatan.

“Saya ingin menikmati ‘mutu yang lebih hebat’ pada kereta mewah Eropah dan Jepun,” kata Mahathir, mencadangkan kereta Proton lebih rendah mutu dan tiada kenikmatan dipandu.

Malah anaknya Mokhzani, seorang peniaga dan penggemar kereta, lebih suka mengelak dari Proton, sebaliknya memilih untuk mengimpot Porsche.
